What makes a teacher great?

I am a teacher. What makes a great teacher is being a person who truly cares. One who makes his/her students feel safe and heard, one who maintains a fun but structured environment, and one who can meaningfully fill the time. Many people know a subject. That doesn’t mean you can or should teach. About 10% of what we actually do is content–at least in an area like mine–80% free and reduced lunch. Most of it is really embodying en loco parentus: being a parent. That means providing, caring, listening, confronting, etc. But, it’s the most fulfilling job if it’s a calling and not just a job…But, I think that’s true of all professions.
